We-Recycle, a non-profit registered NGO since 2016, has an overall objective to collect recyclable waste throughout Mauritius to help clean the environment and to advocate and engage with Government, Local Authorities, business, schools and NGOs/Forces Vives to help shape recycling activities, policy and legislation in Mauritius. We-Recycle was awarded a contract in July 2018 by the Black River District Council to empty eco bins at 28 eco sites and send the collected PET bottles to Polypet Recyclers for recycling. To-date, We-Recycle has recycled approximately 2 500 kilograms of PET bottles in Black River, avoiding almost 2 tonnes of CO2e of emissions by not sending the plastic bottles to landfill. The volumes of PET bottles collected and recycled have increased tremendously, demonstrating that the public is aware of the importance of recycling and is supporting our efforts to keep the environment clean. It has therefore become necessary for We-Recycle to move to a larger depot, employ staff for PET bottle collection (up till now, bottles were collected solely by volunteers) and operate a shredder. We-Recycle, with the help of sponsorship, is in the process of obtaining a shredder to turn large volumes of empty PET bottles filled with air into shreds that fill approximately one-fifth of the space of un-shredded bottles. This will make the collection and storage process economical and efficient and eliminate the wait for service providers to collect the plastic. Collection bags can be re-used as soon as the contents are delivered for shredding at our depot in Tamarin, Black River. With transport, a shredder, depot and staff, the eco bins can be emptied completely on a regular monthly basis to ensure space for depositing more bottles. Financial support will contribute to ensuring a sustainable NGO and enable us to achieve our goals. NGO Regd. No: 14923 - BRN No: A17000027 - CSR No: NCSRF/2018/0046 Email: [email protected]
